Dr. Dan Sykes

Education: Ph.D.- University of Alberta

Biography:

Dr. Dan Sykes received his B.S. in Geosciences from the University of Oregon, a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the University of Alberta, and held a postdoctoral research appointment at Caltech. Along with Bob Shaler, he co-founded the Forensic Science Program at Penn State. He also started the Small Mobile Instruments for Laboratory Enhancement (SMILE) program. SMILE provides STEM resources (equipment and curriculum) to middle school through undergraduate science programs. Currently, SMILE partners and collaborators include several state-wide school districts, several US and international universities and educational institutes (e.g., Campbellsville, Indiana, PSU CSATS, Denmark, Ghana, Singapore).

Dr. Sykes is a senior lecturer in the chemistry department at Penn State University, and teaches everything from general chemistry classes of 350 students to analytical chemistry classes of 16 students and advanced chemical spectroscopy classes of 9 students. He was the co-chair in charge of hosting the national Biennial Conference in Chemical Education at Penn State in 2012, and is currently on the national BCC committee for the ACS. He was recently awarded the Priestly Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching in Chemistry at Penn State, which is a student-nominated prize that is awarded annually to a faculty member for excellence in undergraduate instruction.
